Villa O’Higgins

El pueblo. 
En el corazón de los Andes Patagónicos, en el lugar denominado Desembocadura del río Mayer, se encuentra la pequeña Villa O’Higgins con 450 habitantes. Fue fundada en 1966, pero las particularidades topográficas e inclemencia climática condicionaron a la zona el caracter de frontera natural de la Patagonia. La historia de la zona ha estado ligada a la colonización libre y a los asentamientos para consolidar la soberanía chilena en la región.

Su lejanía de los grandes centros urbanos mantienen a Villa O’Higgins ajena a algunas comodidades, pero la vida compensa en tranquilidad y en la motivación de los emprendimientos familiares de sus habitantes en la ganadería, la explotación del bosque y por cierto en el turismo.
 Villa O’Higgins es conocido como el fin de la Carretera Austral y las puertas de entrada a los glaciares del todavía misterioso Campo de Hielo Patagónico Sur. Año a año llegan a la villa, científicos, expedicionarios y aventureros que buscan los secretos de la Última Frontera de la Patagonia.
La Villa es el único núcleo urbano de la zona. Las localidades más cercanas son Caleta Tortel (400 hab.) a 150 kms, al norte; Cochrane (3.000 hab) a 230 kms al norte, y El Chaltén, Argentina a 110 kms al sur, cruzando el lago O’Higgins y laguna del Desierto. La ciudad más cercana es Coyhaique con 45.000 personas y localizada a 530 kms de distancia hacia el norte.

Como llegar. 

 Para el viajero, rodeada de lagos, ríos y montañas, la Villa es puerta de entrada a un paraíso de la pesca, el trekking, cabalgatas, mountain bike, la aventura o el descanso.icionaron a la zona el caracter de frontera natural de la Patagonia.
Desde Coyhaique, a Villa O’Higgins se llega por tierra por la Carretera Austral o por senderos cordilleranos en huellas aptas sólo para caballos y trekkers. También existe conexión aérea con Coyhaique y pasos fronterizos con Argentina(ver como llegar).

Vida cotidiana. 
La vida de los villaohigginenses está marcada por la pureza de su entorno natural y las cosas simples. La actividad rural autosuficiente de tipo familiar sigue siendo la base del poblamiento y aún es posible apreciar la vida de los colonos, cuyas tradiciones se han mantenido intactas desde sus primeros días de pioneros en la zona a principios del siglo XX (ver cultura y tradiciones). La economía local está caracterizada por la diversidad de sus actividades que van desde los cultivos y recolección hasta el trabajo ganadero y la explotación del bosque nativo (madera, leña). También es importante un importante número de funcionarios públicos y aún incipiente la economía basada en el turismo.
El pueblo tiene su vida propia ya que posee municipalidad, una escuela primaria, jardín infantil y varias instituciones que trabajan por el bienestar de sus habitantes. Los caballos, la pesca, el fútbol y el montañismo son las entretenciones preferidas de la población.
